Leonardo DiCaprio: From Break-Dance to Oscar
from santa barbara to the revenue i think i’m in danger of being clinically depressed from jack dawson to jordan belfort don’t worry i’ll be all right really why did scorsese love him and mark wahlberg hate him i know what you are okay i know what you are and i know what you’re not and how did he escape death rice leonardo dicaprio is the hero of aracolo kino’s story today 2015 hollywood the dolby theater the academy awards julianne moore announces the winner and the oscar goes to leonardo dicaprio
the crowd gives a standing ovation a few minutes later twitter registers a record number of oscar-related tweets while the streets of mexico erupt in spontaneous celebration how did a guy who couldn’t even land a part in a kid’s tv series end up on this stage in order to find out we have to return to the beginning of his journey let’s transport ourselves to 1974 an era of hippies velvet and rock and roll irmalin and george were about to welcome their firstborn into the world he was to be called leonardo irmalin chose that
name while she was in italy and while looking at a da vinci painting felt her child kick george didn’t mind his child being named after the greatest artist in history since he himself made his living by drawing unfortunately his parents split before leo turned one but the couple was determined that the divorce would not affect their parenting from an early age his father while working at a comic store impressed the love for the arts upon the child while his mother taught him languages and toted them around europe often leaving him to stay

with his grandmother and grandfather in germany leonardo was barely potty trained when he began his acting career living room performances and impressions of family members as well as dancing spurred his parents to start taking him to every possible audition at five years old he was cast in the show romper run which could have become his tv debut but they had a little circle and they were all singing and dancing and stuff like that but i was too excited to be on camera so i was running up and slapping the cameras and stuff like that and
screaming and looking inside the camera i tried to pull my mom on stage and finally i was too much to handle so they completely kicked me off the cameras mesmerized the child and he chose his career path leo went to auditions for the next seven years but the only result was hundreds of rejections and a few commercials it reached a point where he almost traded acting for break dancing is it true you almost quit acting when you were 11 yes because i was a break dancer uh uh i was a breakdancer and i knew that was next yeah and i had a you know
choppy sort of punky haircut and the youthful pop and lock master even made it into a local german newspaper the next level of glory was a gum commercial this is a loud bump in two pumping boom boxes both are known for blast it was only four long years later that he finally made it on tv his role in the two episodes of the new lassie became the starting point of his career your parents are gonna get you something to wear trust me i know parents have two of them at home this was followed by roseanne the outsiders parenthood and your

grandmother’s favorite show santa barbara he went from one supporting role to another until he finally got a role in the teen series growing pains where he quickly eclipsed kirk cameron the star of the show and gained a following among teen viewers hey what’s it like to be a teen idol well i see my pictures there and fun seeing those and uh i haven’t really got the full impact of it yet so next was his big screen debut what’s your name josh we don’t know how many big screens exactly showed the horror film critters
3 but after his first movie role he never had to return to television money can’t expect us to believe this horse you can believe what you want son leo’s invitation to audition for the movie this boy’s life became the most important event of 91 and perhaps in his whole life it was an incredible opportunity where the audition was led by the director himself and lines were read by the robert de niro the talented toby maguire was also auditioning for the role and had been friends with leo since childhood it was tense and
competitive very stressful for a 17 year old boy we were midpoint in the scene where de niro’s character is actually ramming a mustard jar into my eye and asking me repeatedly is it empty is it empty is it empty dad no no i knew this was my moment i looked him dead in the eye pointed in his face and shouted at the top of my lungs no silence i knew i had shaken this room up this de niro guy was stunned and then it dawned on me he wasn’t stone-faced because of my awe-inspiring performance he was trying to contain his laughter
and the more he tried the harder it became and eventually everyone in the room but of course me was in complete hysterics it’s over he thought as he left the room but they chose him later de niro admitted that he was the one who had insisted on choosing leo for which leo remains forever indebted to him by the way after leonardo was chosen he didn’t forget his childhood friend and convinced the director to cast toby maguire as one of the supporting characters having landed a real movie dicaprio quickly realized that
everything he’d been doing before had almost nothing to do with acting he had to quickly shed the teen heartthrob image and turn into a real dramatic actor the success of this low budget original work helped him in this respect but the next step took him to a new level altogether hey hey hey uh do the siren do the siren okay the role of arnie in the drama what’s eating gilbert grape made waves viewers who saw leo on the screen for the first time just could not believe that he was acting and not mentally

impaired in real life during filming dicaprio got into character at the snap of a finger according to director losse halstrom it happened so quickly and unexpectedly it was frightening during one of the intense scenes when it seemed like the actor was truly unwell lassie stopped filming leo immediately dropped character and asked with a smile is everything okay come on get one oh god i’m sorry i’m sorry despite this incredibly serious acting task leo remained a teenager johnny depp recalls the boy being extremely
irritating on set always babbling about video games and begging depp for a cigarette when his mother wasn’t looking this role brought leonardo his first golden globe and oscar nominations the first big budget film of his career was the western the quick and the dead his co-stars were russell crowe and sharon stone i don’t have any more fighters just fine yeah it was sharon stone who insisted that leo act in this film [Applause] she personally paid him for his work and the studio wouldn’t take him because of
how much he cost leo’s participation cost her 120 000. so be it bless me father for i have sinned that same year in 1995 the basketball diaries was released in theaters it was a dark and heavy drama about teen drug usage which received mixed reviews it’s banned from showing in several countries and in others was released with serious edits this was partially michael carneal’s fault who inspired by one of the scenes from the movie opened fired on his classmates wake up mr carroll it’s later than you think but let’s return to when the picture was
in the production stage when he approved dicaprio for the main role director scott calvert didn’t know that he was already pretty famous thinking he was the guy from growing pains the choice was made purely because of his appearance you’re a very beautiful player but leah was already a rising star and after having agreed to film he had a say in the casting of the other actors the role of mickey was supposed to be played by mark wahlberg who managed to come to his audition eight hours late an angry leo forced wahlberg
to audition five more times and only after the six let himself be convinced by the director and agreed to cast him yeah real funny i miss a couple of talks for you in the beginning the actress had a strained relationship and we’re constantly taking jabs at each other we’re friends right mark friend’s killian do you accept me as your friend sure thanks pam and you i as well later mark actually became one of leo’s closest friends and their amazing performance brilliantly drew attention to the problem of drug addiction
for a week and you’ll never play basketball here again that you can count on 95 became the most productive year in dicaprio’s career culminating in the release of the biographical drama total eclipse which tells the story of the romance between two of the greatest french poets paul berlin and artur rambo the year after that leo started working on a youthful screen adaptation of shakespeare’s romeo and juliet you can probably guess who he played bonjour there’s a french salutation to your french slot when dicaprio heard about
the project he had not been an avid shakespeare fan thinking him too pompous and difficult to read but director baz lorman intrigued him it also helped that baz couldn’t imagine anyone else playing the role except for leonardo the film became a box office hit and broke even 10 times over meanwhile the tabloids noticed a surge in leo mania fans just couldn’t let him pass the first person to feel the side effects was american model kristen zang when dicaprio came with her to the premiere of romeo and juliet she became hated by
millions my fans sent me tons of hate mail and were practically torn to pieces on that red carpet leo remembers kristen only bored until 1997 when the couple broke up his lovely tender thing it is too rough too rude too boisterous and it pricks like thorn if love be rough with you be rough with love the next film marvin’s room was less lucrative but just as masterfully dramatic well there’s just one dude if this is another telltale i’m not interested in this it once again brought dicaprio and de niro together adding to their duo meryl
streep and diane keaton the profound story of two sisters enchanted the critics and was warmly received by viewers now which of you and some boys institution yes mr dawson meet jeremy sisto the person who was closest to getting the role of jack in titanic up to that point brad pitt tom cruise and macaulay culkin had passed their first auditions but james cameron didn’t stop searching until he brought kate winslet and leonardo together what is there about leo who is this leo guy you know why is he so great it’s it’s
amazing leo leo’s got everything it takes and more to be one of the biggest if not the biggest stars in the in the in the world and it’s a combination of the looks the charm the uniqueness because any great star has to be in some way unique and just solid solid acting capability i mean he’s just really so good got lungs in my air what was my line the shooting process was an incredible ordeal for everyone it was one of the most ambitious projects in the history of hollywood and cost over 200 million dollars and became the
most expensive film in leonardo’s career trust me there was a miniature ocean the reconstruction of the titanic incredible special effects and hundreds of props the acting ensemble rose to the challenge with poise and gave audiences an incredible viewing experience watch closely that’s disgusting this classic scene by the way was leonardo’s own improvisation long before that however they shot the nude scene the one where jack draws rose the director thought that the awkwardness which the actors would feel would look more natural if they had only
just met but winslet cheated and showed leo her breasts before the scene so that the actor wouldn’t be so nervous overrun the bed the couch titanic’s box office journey is the dream of every film studio data shows that in the first five weeks around seven percent of teenage girls in america want to see titanic in the movies at least twice the following luckiest viewers approval was that of the film academy which awarded titanic 14 nominations and 11 oscars which is a record achieved only by ben hur and the lord of the rings
well you deserved it right right all right but instead of celebrating the triumph with the team leonardo informed cameron a day before the ceremony that he wouldn’t go james was livid it was the behavior of a spoiled brat that’s how he described the event leonardo only made matters worse by declaring that he no longer saw himself in such commercial projects and openly admitted regretting that he hadn’t been able to be in boogie nights this is perhaps the only film he regrets turning down to this day but since
shooting for paul thomas anderson’s film was at the same time as titanic these words sounded like he regretted playing the role of jack dawson for which he got a golden globe nomination oh son son do you have the slightest comprehension what you’re doing not really anderson really wanted to see dicaprio play the role of porn star dirk diggler when he turned it down rumor has it that the director said then let the other guy from basketball diaries have it that’s how mark wahlberg landed the role right after filming titanic leo had
his first close call with death when he went parachuting with his friends i jumped out of the airplane and then my first shoot didn’t open they cut it’s tandem so somebody’s on your back they cut that line and then the second one was tangled as well and i saw my friends sort of popping off with their you know their parachutes and i’m still plummeting towards planet earth that was tangled for about a good i don’t know 20 30 seconds and then he told me oh you’re probably gonna break your legs now because this we’re going too fast so it
was one of the worst experiences of my life and i’ll never do it again luckily leonardo didn’t break his legs and got started on his next project where he had his first experience playing the villain did the new chief advisor execute him for distributing rotten food and the next time they’re rioters shoot them when i cast leonardo he was coming out of titanic and titanic was widely expected to be an absolute financial disaster so i didn’t cast leo because i thought he was coming off a hit movie i thought he is the perfect
actor i just thought he was the ideal actor to play this the screen adaptation of the story the man in the iron mask where he played the king of france was an ambitious project containing a plethora of hollywood acting legends why are you so glad i expected action there was no killing there was no fighting i was useless it was a totally relaxed environment which i didn’t expect and everyone was just joking around like you know school boys i’m definitely included in that not counting a cameo in woody allen celebrity dicaprio was absent from the
big screen for the next two years then in 2000 he appeared in danny boyle’s film the beach originally the main role was supposed to be played by ewan mcgregor who had starred in the director’s previous pictures but the studio agreed to finance the project only if it contained leonardo what what can i say boyle agreed which led to a conflict of such magnitude that ewen didn’t speak to him for the next 15 years me leonardo received his first seven-digit paycheck for the role mcgregor got his revenge on leo later when he bested him
at the auditions for moulin rouge which was being filmed by dicaprio’s friend vaz lorman all connected all playing the same game but the studio was not wrong about the beach its advertising campaign relied heavily on leo and in large part thanks to his presence the gloomy adventure thriller broke even at the box office thanks around the same time dicaprio got involved in his first serious relationship up until 2005 he dated brazilian model giselle bunchen however the millennium marked the beginning of another serious relationship one with
the courts there were a series of lawsuits having to do with the film don’s plum how did you guys discover this place the plum club a movie where he starred opposite toby maguire in 1995 when the friends weren’t yet so popular but it made it to the big screens only five years later what’s wrong what’s wrong with you the producers consciously stalled waiting for toby and leo’s names to be enough to bring people to the theater really yeah you’re so surprised it’s so simple like yeah sure the actors in turn asked all the studios
which they knew of not to agree to its distribution in the end the creators filed a lawsuit demanding 40 million dollars in reparations the case was being reviewed up until 2007 when dicaprio and mcguire were able to prove that they had acted in the film as a personal favor to a friend on the condition that it wasn’t to be released to wider audiences i want you guys to mean it all right leonardo and toby’s journey was not yet over at that time james cameron was working on a screenplay for spider-man and dicaprio was the main
candidate for the role it’s unclear exactly what happened but for some reason they both left the project and were replaced by sam raimi and toby maguire leonardo had no regrets about that missed opportunity because that was when he was introduced to martin scorsese working on gangs in new york brought the two closer together and created one of the greatest duos in the history of cinematography i know a thing or two about a thing or two i got friends in this town and they tell me things the film was shot in rome where they
constructed a whole block of 20th century new york but leo did not have the luxury of walking the streets of italy’s capital between scenes and was confined to his hotel room all day because the streets were filled with his fans who were obsessed with their idol on set however he still had to fight off women at scorsese’s request cameron diaz had to literally hit leonardo after a few takes his face went numb and he got such a bad headache that they had to pause filming that scene and film something else to give the actor a break
dicaprio himself was also guilty of violence during the fight scene he accidentally broke daniel day lewis’s nose who ignored his injury and stayed in character until the end of the take [Applause] strangely after its release the reel tanked at the box office despite great reviews from critics and 10 oscar nominations however at the ceremony it set a new record but not winning any of the awards it was nominated the next year brought on a collaboration between leo and steven spielberg filming catch me if you can selfishly i look at
the story as an opportunity for me to take a really great creative occasion and work with a young man who i’ve always admired who one day was kind enough just based on my calling his agent to send my daughter his biggest fan an autographed picture you know and that meant a lot in my family and made me a hero among my kids but to worry about it neither dicaprio nor tom hanks who also starred in the film was the first choice for the roles spielberg had planned to make the picture with johnny depp and james gandolfini but they both left the
project even better leonardo got the chance to act in a fantastic film and got to meet an unbelievably interesting person frank abagnale had written an autobiography which was the basis for the script and often visited the set and even had a cameo roll the financial success of the picture was not reflected in the number of awards but at least leonardo was nominated for his third golden globes thank you in 2004 he appeared in the biopic aviator where he collaborated with martin scorsese for a second time dicaprio crafted the character of the
eccentric billionaire howard hughes long before filming started he traveled across america meeting with people who knew hughes and who had experience with obsessive compulsive disorder whose advice he used during the scenes with hugh’s fits i need to sleep i should drink something first the attentive viewer might notice that the color grading gradually changes during the film martin scorsese did this on purpose the scenes from each period of the picture reflect the kind of film which was available to cinematographers
at the time enough is enough mr hughes are you ever going to let us actually see this little epic of yours the aviator like the previous project the duo worked on received 11 oscar nominations but this time it won five of them however neither the director nor the main character received the statuette though they did both win a golden globe in the categories of best actor and best film riding the success of this project they immediately started work on the next one ever since the hong kong thriller internal affairs was
released in 2002 hollywood was fixated with the idea of remaking it scorsese originally wanted to film it with tom cruise and brad pitt but for some unknown reason tom backed up and brad decided he was too old for the role stayed on with the project as a producer it also took a lot of work to convince jack nicholson to play the role of frank costello in his typical fashion he first turned down the role who can get out of here and only after dicaprio and scorsese personally met with him did he change his mind in addition the acting
ensemble was joined by matt damon and a close friend of leo’s mark wahlberg i’m the best friend you have on the face of this earth and i’m going to help you understand something you punk you’re no caught his role in the departed became one of the toughest for leo the nervous breakdown which he depicted on the screen was the result of hours of meticulous preparation and some of the scenes with nicholson were literally tortured are you still a cop no no no one on set knew that nicholson had a gun with him not to mention a real
loaded gun scorsese said that everyone was in shock because of that leo’s initial reaction which was one of genuine fear made it into the final cut got something you wanna ask me the result was one of the best films by this duo and martin scorsese finally won his first oscar thank you thank you thank you rick thank you thank you leo received his third oscar nomination for the action thriller blood diamond which was released that same year this movie was filmed in south africa and the trip turned leonardo’s life upside down while filming he began to
visit orphanages offered them financial support and even adopted a girl one of them though she ended up staying in africa he continues to keep in touch with her and sent her money after he finished the project he began to actively advocate for the problems in africa and for global warming once the picture hit the theaters it attracted the attention of the authorities which started to heavily criticize the south african government they even had to invite journalists from all over the world so that they could see for themselves that all the issues
connected to illegal diamond mining were in the past also while shooting blood diamond leo almost lost his life for a second time when he was scuba diving in a cage to look at sharks they actually said in 30 years this has never happened but the tuna kind of got stuck on the top of the cage and the great white leapt out and it went into the cage with me and half of its body was in and out and i flattened down at the bottom and it chomped a few times but i survived it and the work that they’re doing is great they’re protecting sharks
as well that same year he fell in love with the israeli supermodel bar rafaeli whom he dated for five years and once again leo disappeared from the screen until 2008 when revolutionary road and body of lies were released i just offered him asylum well you lied buddy just cut him loose and put him back on the street both films became sort of a reunion with previous co-stars in body of lies he worked alongside russell crowe once again in a plot twisting action film about the work of several cia agents if something happens
i will shoot you right now just go go in revolutionary road he acted opposite kate winslet and kathy bates who had worked on titanic with him kate and leo are very good friends and continue to support each other throughout their acting journeys leo i’m so happy i can stand here and tell you how much i love you and how much i’ve loved you for 13 years maybe that is why they were able to play their part so convincingly in such a difficult piece of drama so now i’m crazy because i don’t love you right is that the point no wrong you’re not crazy
and you do love me and once again dicaprio joined forces with martin scorsese he’s created something really unique here first they wanted to make the wolf of wall street but the studio thought the project too expensive it was set aside and instead leo and martin decided to work on creating the thriller shutter island shutter island is an anagram of the phrase truth and lies this is one of the many puzzle pieces carefully hidden throughout the picture huh anything unusual occur this is a mental institution marshall for the criminally
insane usual isn’t a big part of our day it’s just water it’s a lot of water are you all right to the pale i’m fine it’s just uh i’m not following you i’m sorry in our opinion this film is one of the best thrillers of all time a descendant of the film noir era especially hitchcock’s vertigo which by the way was scorsese’s inspiration the picture’s release was set for 2009 but the studio pushed it to february of the next year simply because it didn’t want to spend a lot of money on advertising film promoters wanted to
save money by writing on the free press that came from the films nominated for oscars in the same year unfortunately shutter island became the duo’s only joint project that didn’t garner a single academy award nomination hey you’re kidding me nonetheless they still broke even and even made it into every list of the top thrillers of all time i think we’ve gotten all we came here for so in 2009 leo visited russia this was a memorable experience no not because of the stroll through red square but because of his third near-death
experience i was on a plane to russia and the engine exploded i was the only person there that seemed to see this but it was a flaming fireball i came in and the stewardess came out said we seem to have a slight problem here russian guy finally said what is the problem i said well we we lost one of our engines he goes how many engines did we have well we had to now we have one a russian plane has caught firewire landing in moscow the aircraft was carrying 140 passengers but no one was injured in the incident christopher
nolan had been nurturing the idea for a film about dreams for more than 20 years little by little the script began to materialize nolan rewrote it dozens of times but knew for sure that the main character in the picture had to be played by dicaprio once an idea has taken hold in the brain it’s almost impossible to eradicate after reading it leonardo immediately agreed to take part and for the next two months he and nolan poured over every detail about his character and rewrote several scenes as nolan’s wife and producer emma thomas
recalls leva and chris’s work with the character transformed the story from a puzzle into a character’s journey which the viewer could sympathize to hey guys hey how are you how you doing huh good okay again dicaprio said it was very hard for him to act in films like conception in shutter island because of the lack of a clear villain and the unbearable dramatic tension are you all right mr club yeah yeah everything’s just fine the actor took special note of his time with marion cody yard took her preparation before filming each scene to
another level by meticulously discussing and rehearsing every detail if i jumped would i survive interestingly nolan based the members of the inception team on the members of a real film crew cobb was the director arthur the producer ariani the set designer eems the actor saito the studio ceo and fisher the viewer am i boring a lot is known about this film so we won’t get into details about the plot just remember if you don’t want to get lost in a dream don’t forget to choose your totem bugs moran and al capone topped the list
of public enemies look around they could be anywhere in 2011 leonardo acted in a biographical drama called j edgar by clint eastwood it told the story of the head of the fbi john edgar hoover we like to use these son these are gifts from me to you there’s no law that prevents us from using our own weapons the difficult task of bringing to the screen more than 60 years of a man’s life was not just hard by itself but required the work of dozens of specialists leonardo had more than 80 costumes reflecting the style of every
era contained in the narrative alrighty he also had to spend up to five hours a day in hair and makeup which included layers of silicon on his face body pads wigs gray hair and a prosthetic nose that is accurate too in 2011 fate brought leo and quentin tarantino together although that’s not quite true three years earlier tarantino had planned on inviting dicaprio to play hans landa’s role in inglorious bastards why don’t you try tell us what the happened and though leonardo’s german isn’t bad and kleine
the director later decided that he wanted an actor whose native tongue was german [Laughter] but the desire to work together didn’t pass that’s why in 2011 leo joined the ensemble of django unchained once again quentin saw the villain in the actor calvin candy was one of the most narcissistic self-indulgent racist most despicable characters i’ve ever read in my entire life what did you say boy calm down butch no offense given even tarantino admitted that calvin was the only character he’d ever created towards whom he did not
have any sympathy at all and then we got nothing more to talk about for leonardo it was a real challenge to depict pure evil on the screen especially since it was only his second roll of the kind in his career once he couldn’t even finish a scene because of the overwhelming amount of racist comments in it almost as though he was punishing himself for the role and i said what’s the deal he said it’s tough i said you know what you’re human it’s supposed to be tough samuel jackson quickly said hey mf get over that it’s just another
tuesday for us and let’s get going that’s all right it’s all right leonardo was always getting hurt while rehearsing the scene with the hammer it broke and hit him on the forehead and probably one of the most famous stories was about how dicaprio cut his hand banging on the table i let your palm flat on that table top and continued the take as though nothing had happened and i opened my hand and blood starts pouring everywhere and i saw jamie go yeah yes and quinn quentin like had luna goes when the take was
over the whole film crew gave him a standing ovation after bandaging his hand leo suggested that calvin used that hand to cup carrie washington’s face the actress and director both thought it was a good idea so tarantino quickly found some fake blood don’t ask where it’s tarantino he always has a little fake blood and they shot the scene thanks to the role leonardo was nominated for another golden globe for best supporting actor and the golden globe goes to the award went to his django co-star christoph
waltz you little dickens you next leonardo transformed into jake gatsby the king of soirees and hopeless romantic you think it’s too much it was the first real film featuring dicaprio and toby maguire since this boy’s life there’s anything that you want just ask for it they were brought to the same set by the director baz larman whom leo had worked with on the picture romeo and juliet the great gatsby resurrected the fashion of the 30s and rightly received an oscar for best costumes and set design becoming another sensation in leonardo’s
career while he was playing the part of the king of soirees on screen in real life he was more and more busy saving the environment having spent three million dollars in 2013 alone on the preservation of nepalese tigers that same year they finally got the funding to shoot the wolf of wall street making it his fifth collaboration with martin scorsese leo created an undeniably unforgettable character money doesn’t just buy you a better life better food better cars better it also makes you a better person having spent several months
preparing with the real jordan belfort who taught him everything from broker slang an ipo is an initial public offering it’s the first time a stock is offered for sale to the general population to how to behave under the influence of heavy drugs jesus christ by the way the picture is littered with improvisations as martin scorsese himself has said he loves it when actors think of something unusual so he tends to give them a lot of artistic freedom unfortunately his fifth oscar nomination didn’t bring him a victory
the is that you know the films of martin and leo seem to be cursed when it comes to the academy this time was no exception apart from leo the statuettes evaded jonah hill no yeah nothing’s fine martin scorsese and writer terence winner cheap failure at the oscars was only the beginning of the problems connected to this reel the story about money laundering corrupt practices was destined to become involved in a real fbi investigation about money laundering and corrupt practices the malaysian
scandal left the public in shock the theft and concealment of funds by the malaysian prime minister and his son were directly connected to the wolf of wall street these malaysian swindlers were the owners of the red granite company which invested more than 100 million dollars in the film the real question is this was all this legal absolutely not leonardo testified before the fbi and was forced to return a present to red granite the actual oscar of marlon brando also for a long time his 25 million dollar paycheck
from the film was frozen leonardo’s participation in any crimes was never confirmed but any gifts he received from the stolen money he had to return but that was not the end of the connection between scorsese and multi-billion dollar asian companies in 2015 he shot a commercial short called the audition where he shot leonardo dicaprio robert de niro and brad pitt martin like leo had not worked with de niro since 1995 when robert had worked on casino with scorsese in marvin’s room with leonardo the audition became the most expensive
commercial in history the budget of 70 million dollars was two times bigger than the last record holder chanel fashion house let’s return to 2014 when leo washed away the dirty aftertaste of the malaysian scandals with some philanthropic work on the 16th of september 2014 he was chosen as a united nations ambassador for climate change and since then has been devoting more time to that role than to his acting career paradise that has been degraded and destroyed we’re knowingly doing this even before filming the biography of
jordan belfort leonardo agreed to work on the revenant with alejandro gonzalez in el rito on the condition that the director would wait until dicaprio finished filming the wolf of wall street inagrito agreed and decided to use the time to film birdman that clown doesn’t have half your town however as soon as the actor was freed up he was being courted for the role of steve jobs in the film of the same name out of respect for alejandro an interest in the revenant leo easily turned down the saga about apple’s creator and was presented
with the greatest challenge of his career torture in the business the proper thing to do would be though to finish him off quick he had to learn to fire a musket start a fire learn native american dialects punk stock go go go and sit in makeup for several hours a day it was about a four to five hour makeup job every day with all the scars and so again it was just a joy he also had to eat a piece of raw bison meat even though he is a vegetarian amazingly despite the large number of difficult and dangerous scenes he didn’t
get hurt once during the whole filming process for which he often thanked the stunt coordinators and filmed him interestingly it was leo who brought tom hardy to the project like muslim if you like while filming the actors agreed on an interesting wager the loser had to get a tattoo of the winner’s choosing hardy maintained that he definitely wouldn’t get an oscar nomination for his role as fitzgerald dicaprio thought he would as a result tom got a new tattoo leo knows all written in leonardo’s own hand i’m saying it
it’s savage it’s savage and the result of their acting performance was a brilliant film there’s no reason to go into detail about the success of the reel half a billion in box office sales flattering reviews and every award imaginable alejandro g inaudible for the time being it was the climax of leonardo’s career the moment with which our story began let us not take this planet for granted i do not take tonight for granted thank you so very much after this the actor allowed himself a four-year-long absence from the screen
his next work was supposed to be the drama black hand which told the story of the so-called italian sherlock holmes but leo delayed the filming of that picture instead he decided to work on quentin tarantino’s ninth film once upon a time in hollywood a criminal thriller also starring brad pitt and margot robbie but you can learn all about that in the third part of our tarantino documentary rick dalton rehearsal tape starting in five four three two one this is akolokino we hope you liked the video and you learned a lot of
interesting things okay all right we’re all good don’t need to go no we’re done that was fantastic it’s gotta be against the lord look just damn good baby i feel real good and i wish i was watch everybody
