Prince William gives emotional update on Princess Kate’s cancer recovery

The Princess of Wales, 44, revealed in January 2025 that her cancer was in remission

Prince William praised Princess Kate’s resilience as her cancer remains in remission, highlighted her recent trip to Italy to promote early childhood development, and said she is gradually resuming public duties while balancing rest.

Prince William may be the heir apparent, but as far as he’s concerned, Princess Kate is the true royal.

Prince William Makes Rare Emotional Comments on Kate Middleton's Cancer Journey

The Prince of Wales opened up about his wife’s resilience amid her cancer recovery in a rare radio interview on “Heart Breakfast,” released Friday, May 22. William’s remarks come a week after Kate visited the Italian city of Reggio Emilia for a work trip.

“She’s an amazing mom, an amazing wife and, literally, our family couldn’t cope without her,” William, 43, told hosts Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston. “So, she’s been absolutely stunning, brilliant.”

In March 2024, Princess Kate and Kensington Palace revealed that the Princess of Wales, then 42, had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer following abdominal surgery and was undergoing a “course of preventive chemotherapy treatment.”

About a year after announcing her diagnosis, Kate shared last January that her cancer was officially in remission. In a statement at the time, the princess said while she was “looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead,” she acknowledged that “it takes time to adjust to a new normal.

“She’s been amazing. She’s been through so much in the last couple of years, particularly,” Prince William said on “Heart Breakfast,” adding, “She’d been looking forward to the Italian trip a lot. And so, I’m really glad it went really well.”

During her trip, Princess Kate met with local families, educators and community members to emphasize the importance of early childhood development, including a visit to the Anna Frank School.

“She wanted to go and do lots of research,” Prince William continued. “She spends, God knows how much time now, looking through all the paperwork. She’s a proper pro on early years.

“Most evenings, I’m fighting to get past in the bedroom, what paperwork that she’s got lined up, ready to read. So, I’m so pleased it went well for her, and yeah, I think she came back buzzing.”

Kate reflected on the emotional impact of her trip in a May 14 Instagram post, writing that she had “seen firsthand the power of nature and creativity that put human connection at the center of a child’s world.”

“I have had such a deeply moving and unforgettable time here,” Princess Kate continued. “Thank you to the people of Reggio Emilia for welcoming me into a culture of care with such warmth and generosity.”

Despite the success of Kate’s trip, Prince William said on “Heart Breakfast” that his wife is “edging herself” back into travel engagements as she continues her cancer recovery.

“Away trips like that take a lot out of you,” William said. “So, we have to balance that, make sure she’s OK and rested, but she’s in good form.”
