Family Thought Their Beloved Dogs Had D1ed in a Ma.ssive Fire. Then They Heard Barking From the Rubble
For nearly an entire day, the Lopez family believed they had lost everything.
A devastating fire had destr0yed the South Florida businesses that had supported their family for decades. The flames reduced years of hard work, memories, and livelihood to rubble. But amid the heartbreak, there was another painful fear weighing on their minds: their beloved dogs, Fantasma and Mimi, were missing.
As the hours pa.ssed, hope began to fade.
The family feared the two dogs had perished in the blaze that tore through their businesses in Opa locka on the evening of May 25. But just when they thought they were facing an unimaginable loss, something extraordinary happened. More than 17 hours after the fire erupted, faint barking could be heard coming from the ruins.
What followed was a reunion that left an entire family in tears.
A Fire That Destroyed Decades of Hard Work
The ma.ssive fire tore through JC Motors and Gary Used Auto Parts, two family owned businesses that had served the community for more than three decades.
For the Lopez family, the businesses were far more than a source of income. They represented years of sacrifice, perseverance, and family history. According to Gary Lopez, whose parents owned the businesses, his father had started as an employee before eventually purchasing the company and building it into a successful family operation.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
But while firef1ghters battled the flames, the family realized that Fantasma and Mimi had disappeared during the cha0s. As smoke filled the area and the buildings collapsed, nobody knew whether the dogs had managed to escape.
For Gary, the uncertainty was unbearable.
“I don’t have kids, so those are my kids,” he said while waiting outside the charred remains of the property.
Instead of going home, he remained near the wreckage throughout the night, desperately hoping for any sign that his best friends were still alive.
The Sound That Changed Everything

Hour after hour, there was nothing.
Then, more than 17 hours after the fire began, Gary heard something he never expected.
Barking.
The sound appeared to be coming from somewhere within the smoldering debris. Suddenly, the possibility that Fantasma and Mimi had survived no longer seemed impossible.
Moments later, the dogs emerged.
According to reports, the two pups ran directly toward Gary before rolling onto their backs for belly rubs, as if they knew they were finally safe. The emotional moment instantly erased hours of fear and heartbreak.
“That feeling can’t be beat,” Gary said afterward.
“I just felt relief. That’s like your best friend.”
His mother was equally overwhelmed. Upon seeing the dogs alive, she reportedly burst into tears and shouted in Spanish, “You’re saved!”
For a family that had spent the previous day mourning what they thought was another devastating loss, the reunion felt nothing short of miraculous.
A Small Miracle During a Difficult Time

Although Fantasma and Mimi survived, the Lopez family still faces a difficult road ahead.
The fire destr0yed the businesses that had supported not only their family but also numerous employees and their loved ones. The family says the disaster has left them uncertain about the future and searching for ways to rebuild after losing their primary source of income.
A fundraising effort has since been launched to help support the family’s recovery and a.ssist the employees affected by the disaster. According to the family, more than a dozen households have been impacted by the loss of the businesses.
Yet amid the devastation, Fantasma and Mimi’s surv1val provided something priceless.
Hope.
In moments of tragedy, people often search for reasons to keep moving forward. For the Lopez family, seeing their dogs emerge from the ashes reminded them that not everything had been lost.
The buildings may be gone, but the family members they feared were gone forever came home.
And after one of the worst days of their lives, that was a miracle they will never forget.
